What should I do if the message "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port" appears in Windows?

RELATES TO:

  • Windows XP, XP x64, Vista, Vista x64, 7, 7 x64
  • Operating system messages
  • USB printers, scanners, All-In-Ones, Photoviewers and other Epson hardware

EXPLANATION:

This message indicates that Windows recognises that a USB 2.0 device (the Epson device e.g. printer/scanner/All-In-One/Photoviewer) is connected to a USB 1.1 port. The message is not an error. USB 2.0 devices are backwards-compatible with USB 1.1, but as a USB 2.0 device connected to a USB 1.1 port, it will only operate at the USB 1.1 data transfer rate, this message appears to advise that it can perform faster if connected to a USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) port.

You can close the message by clicking the close icon in the right corner of the message title bar.

Message: This device can perform faster "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port"

If your computer has USB 2.0 controllers onboard/installed, we recommend connecting your Epson product to a USB 2.0 port to take advantage of faster data transfer speeds. USB 2.0 Hi-Speed ports are often indicated by a sticker on the PC casing. Otherwise please refer to your computer manufacturer's documentation for further help.

Windows XP SP1 does not have USB 2.0 support by default. Windows XP SP2 and later has USB 2.0 support by default. If your computer has USB 2.0 controllers onboard/installed, you will have to manually install the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed drivers via Device Manager, starting with the USB host controller. To check if your system provides sufficient USB support, see the following article - the link is available in the "Related Articles" section above: How to check if your system has sufficient USB/FireWire/SCSI support for Epson scanners and printers

If you continue to receive this message, you could disable USB error detection if you wish.
